Brookings Summer Arts Festival 2008

The second time around was not that exciting anymore. The Brookings Summer Arts Festival 2008 showcased mostly the same stuff as last year. There were booths from Top National Artists. Ethnic and gourmet food booths, Antique and Old West booths, and live entertainments abound at the Brookings Pioneer park during the two-day event (July 12th and 13th).


Children enjoyed the days the most, with playgrounds and areas intended for them at the park.



The Filipino booth (of Ate Annie) catered the hungry mouths of every Filipino who happened to be there. Thanks to the sumptuous grilled lamb and the usual eggroll. Thanks to Kuya Dong too for the extra food on the table. Of course there were beers and the smiles of Filipinos chatting and taking photos.


I only stayed for an hour or so and decided to go home. Next year, there might be something different to see than just the two jugglers who never change their costumes. LOL.

Brookings Fireworks 2008

When there's fireworks in Brookings, South Dakota, it's gotta be the 4th of July (Independence Day). It's some sort of a requirement to have fireworks display to commemorate the freedom of the United States. Whichever State you are, expect to see some colorful blasts in the air, as fireworks light up the sky.


It was my second time to celebrate Independence Day with the Americans at the Swiftel area. Americans loved the day. They brought with them chairs and lawn towels, like they were there for a picnic, while a band played some contemporary music on stage.





I came there solely for the Fireworks. Last year, the display sucked big time that I went home very disappointed. This time,I expected much more fun, much more impressive show of lights. This time, I was close enough to appreciate it.



If the last time rated negative on my own scale, this 2nd time showed a bit of improvement in terms of synchronization of blasts and timing of effects. Spacing between blasts was just okay, it didn't drag long enough to make me sleep, unlike last year's.



Overall, if I rate it from 1 to 10 (10 being the highest), I'd give this year's Brookings Fireworks a passing 6.

Gamma Sigma Epsilon First Summer Party

We had our first Gamma Sigma Epsilon (GSE) summer party last weekend. As usual, we had a blast.




The highlight of the party was the pingpong game in our garage. Everyone loved the new table legs my housemate Val and I recently built. I played just once and (what would you expect) won!




Food was awesome. I cooked a spicy pork with coconut milk, which everyone loved. They specifically mentioned the unique taste of the sauce. Truth is, I love the unique blending of the coconut milk and the partly "browned" pork. I might cook it again someday.

Kung Fu Panda's secret ingredient...

There are so many lessons to learn from the movie Kung Fu Panda, which I had the chance to watch last night. Here are few inspiring lines from the movie.
1. There's no secret ingredient to greatness besides faith in yourself. To be able to create something special, you have to believe you are special. This is the main positive theme that resonates throughout the film.

2. Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today? Today is a gift, that's why it's called present.

3. Often the path one takes to avoid their destiny is the very one that leads them to it.

4. There is no price for Awesomeness or Attractiveness.

5. There are no accidents. Everything happens for a reason.

"Kung Fu Panda" features Jack Black as Po the Panda, a lowly waiter in a noodle restaurant, who is a kung fu fanatic but whose shape doesn't exactly lend itself to kung fu fighting. In fact, Po's defining characteristic appears to be that he is the laziest of all the animals in ancient China. That's a problem because powerful enemies are at the gates, and all hopes have been pinned on a prophesy naming Po as the "Chosen One" to save the day. A group of martial arts masters are going to need a black belt in patience if they are going to turn this slacker panda into a kung fu fighter before it's too late.

The Table Tennis project

We have this table tennis board in the house that has been the source of evening fun for me and my housemates when we couldn't think of anything to do after watching Law and Order. We simply head on to the garage where we placed the board on top of chairs to support it. We have been having this kind of setup since summer of 2007. Although it was kinda looking messy down under and not to mention being frail, it worked for the whole summer months.
Today, we finally decided to make it a little better. There's got to be proper legs down there! We need to get rid of those chairs and replace them with wooden frames!

A short visit to Lowe's establishment plus a quick planning turned out beneficial. We ended up buying wood planks, nails, a saw and a hammer. Yes, baby, we were up to building our makeshift table-tennis frame support!

The size of the main upper frame has to be 6ft long and 3ft wide. Legs height has to be about 2.5ft. I was excited to see a good finish.
I did most of the sawing and nailing. My housemate thought I have the best experience to do those stuff. I used to build fun structures when I was still in Pinas. My parents were true witnesses of how I could build benches from anything rubbish. Most of the time, I don't tell anyone of my plan, I just start taking Dad's handy construction tools and begin conceptualizing and building my idea. Everyone in the family will be surprised to see the finish product.

Today, I applied my carpentry skills once again. Oh man, was it good to know I didn't lose the grip! I could still cut wood planks, hammer and nail them together just like before, or just like a pro!

It only took a little over an hour to see the fruits of our labor. Here goes our table tennis support frame!
It is time for a house party again. Bring on the fun baby and let's hit the table tennis ball!

Lawn mowing is an exercise -- make it a habit

Apart from jogging, lawn mowing twice a month must be part of my regular exercise in this town called Brookings (South Dakota).

The very first time I tried lawn mowing was last summer of 2007. If it wasn't because each household, as the law in Brookings dictates, is required to mow the lawn and to keep the yard clean, I would have not done it. You see, mowing is hardwork. Next, you'd get to lay yourself out in the sun. As an Asian whose skin is already dark, no way that I'd allow it to become darker. I easily get so brown that it'd take weeks or even a month to restore my "normal" color. So, I rather stay indoors and avoid the sun, if possible. Yet, the very first time I tried lawn mowing, I thought it was the one of the coolest things I could do.

Mowing makes me sweat a lot and therefore it is a good option for jogging. It is an exercise of the arms, controlling the mower as it rolls over the tall grasses and turns in each bend. It is also the best time to say hello to the neighbors and get to meet them personally. It is also a good way to show off what you've got -- say your abs or nice upper built as you go mowing half-naked (but I don't do that..LOL). You can pass through or at least get a peek on girls (half-naked too) lying on the grass suntanning themselves (when you do this, put on your sunglasses).

Today, my roommates and I decided to mow the lawn. Spring has started indeed and grasses are growing so fast. See the photos of my African housemate mowing while I watch and pose for pictures. LOL.

For SDSU students who detest lawn mowing, get an apartment and not a stand-alone house. Apartments mostly don't require tenants to mow, owners take care of the job.

To those mowing this summer, wear your headphones, sing as you cut the grasses merrily!
