While shopping I saw a brand of sugar made from Brazil. I thought of the Philippines for a while, since we also produce sugar locally. But I think our volume of production is not as much as those produced in other countries.

There are more than 100 countries that produce sugar, mostly in the tropical and sub-tropical zones of the southern hemisphere. Who tops the list? Brazil is the consistent high performer when it comes to sugar production.

The other top producers of sugar include: India, China, USA, Thailand, Mexico, Australia. Never I've seen the Philippines on the list.

I wonder how the sugar from Brazil tastes like, as it also comes from sugar cane, just like ours. Ah, it might be just as sweet.

Since Brazil is a sugar-cane country, a large portion of this sugar cane is also used in ethanol production. Ethanol is used in fuel for Brazil’s many automobiles, and exported around the world. The Brazilian government has stipulated that a certain percentage of all fuel in Brazil must be blended ethanol to save on the cost of importing petrol and increases the self sufficiency of the country.

Final thought: the costs of producing sugar from sugar cane are lower than those in respect of processing sugar beets.
